New Machine Setups / Rebuilds - For Desktop Support Team and Desktop Associates ONLY

  • Newly purchased machines are imaged.

  • Security tickets specifying that the client should backup for a rebuild will require an image.

  • Virus, spyware, or other software related issues that can't be resolved within 20 minutes of review should be scheduled for rebuild.  These computers should also be scheduled for rebuild if subscribing the machine to WSUS and updating Symantec AntiVirus does not fix the problem.

The images below have been developed for Dell Optiplex and Latitude computers. They may work on other models as well, but do not try them on Dell Dimension XPS.

PC Setup Final Checklist

Imaging New Machines with Universal Image:

  1. Insert Universal image disk and boot from the DVD by tapping F12 at startup and choosing boot from CD-ROM in Setup > Boot Sequence.

  2. When prompted select the appropriate option:

    • Start Ghost with IDE-CDROM Drivers for models 620 and older and click OK.

    • Start Ghost with SATA-CDROM Drivers for 745 models and click OK.

  3. The system normally will reboot after imaging. If prompted, choose Reset to restart the PC and the setup will continue.  Important: to avoid booting from the image disk, remove it from the CD-ROM drive immediately during reboot.

  4. Enter the computer name per standard naming convention and do not change the Administrator Password at the Computer Name and Administrator Password screen.

  5. Choose uta.edu for Domain at the Workgroup or Computer Domain screen and click Next. Enter your uta\NetID and password when prompted and click OK.

  6. Machine will reboot.

  7. Log into the local machine with the special administrator username and password.

  8. Verify in Device Manager that all hardware drivers have been installed. If there are hardware issues, proceed with installing needed hardware drivers.

  9. Update Administrator group by right-clicking on My Computer > Manage > browse to Local Users & Groups > select Groups > double-click on the Administrator and add the following:

    • uta\microsys.  This group must be added to allow our technicians to work on the machines if need arise.

    • uta\NetID_of_ownerofmachine.  Check with the Department Associate, Administrative Assistant, or other full-time employee if the owner of the machine is a student before adding him/her as an administrator.

    • uta\NetID_of _associate (see list of associates)

    • Click OK > enter uta\NetID and password when prompted > exit Computer Management > restart the machine

  10. Log into the UTA Domain.

  11. See Setup Machine to complete the build.

Rebuilding with Universal Image:

  • Before rebuilding the machine, refer client to http://www.uta.edu/oit/policy/cs/Desktop/backingup.html for information on how to back up his/her data and follow up with an e-mail to ensure the backup has been completed.

  • Copy the reply email into the HEAT Journal.

  • When picking up the computer check again with the client if the data has been backed up, especially if few days have passed since the last correspondence.

  • Proceed to Universal image.
