1. Will my files be safe during the upgrade?

  • Yes, your files should remain safe during the upgrade. However, it's recommended to back up important data beforehand using OneDrive or an external hard drive.

2. How long will the upgrade take?

  • Typically, the upgrade takes 120 to 180 minutes, depending on your computer’s performance and internet speed. To avoid any issues, please minimize computer use during the process and save all open documents beforehand.

3. Will Windows 11 work with my current accessories and software?

  • Most software and accessories that work with Windows 10 should also work with Windows 11. To be sure, check with the manufacturer of your software or accessories.

4. What if my computer doesn’t meet the Windows 11 minimum system requirements?

  • Older computers that don’t meet the requirements for Windows 11 may need to be replaced. Please work with your department to replace these devices before Windows 10 reaches its end-of-life in October 2025.

5. What do I do if my research computer has a special configuration not compatible with Windows 11?

  • We understand that there might be special situations where an upgrade or replacement will not be an option. We will review each scenario on a case-by-case basis, please submit a Security Exception Request.

6. Can I upgrade my computer now?

  • Yes! In some cases, users may self-upgrade through Windows Updates. Please submit an Upgrade Operating System Request ticket here.

7. When will Windows 10 no longer be supported?

  • Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. To ensure a smooth transition and allow time for resolving any unforeseen issues, we are requesting all departments to complete the transition to Windows 11 by our internal deadline of September 12, 2025.

8. What if an application I use is not supported?

  • If a critical application is not supported in Windows 11, please contact your DSA or OIT support team for assistance and guidance on alternatives or solutions.

9. Will my printer work with Windows 11?

  • Most modern printers will work with Windows 11, but older models may require updated drivers. Your DSA or OIT support team can assist with connecting to shared network-based printers if needed.
