Project Details
The Windows 10 End of Life for Endpoints project focuses on upgrading compatible devices to Windows 11, the latest operating system version, by our internal deadline of September 12, 2025. This initiative is crucial to maintaining compliance with security standards, accurately identifying and upgrading compatible assets, and ensuring data integrity throughout the migration process.
Key Activities
To achieve the project objectives, the following key activities will be undertaken:
- Conduct an inventory and assessment of current devices to determine compatibility with Windows 11
- Provide centralized support and monitoring of the upgrade process
Scope and Boundaries
The project scope includes the upgrade of compatible devices, but excludes:
- Non-Windows Devices or Systems: Such as macOS, Linux, or mobile devices
- Major Network Infrastructure Upgrades: Including server upgrades or replacements
- Virtual Machines: These will not be migrated as part of this project
Departmental Responsibilities
- Replacing Incompatible Endpoints: The cost of replacing endpoints that cannot support Windows 11 will be the responsibility of the respective department
- Filing Security Exceptions: If an endpoint cannot be upgraded or replaced, the department or client will be responsible for filing a security exception with the University's Information Security Office (ISO), providing justification for the exception and a plan for mitigating any associated security risks
Departments with Distributed Support Associates (DSAs) will be responsible for:
- Implementing the Windows 11 Upgrade: DSAs will be responsible for upgrading their department’s devices
- Testing and Validation: DSAs will be responsible for testing and validating their department’s specialized applications after the upgrade to ensure they are functioning as expected
Departments without DSAs will work with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Endpoint Support to arrange for upgrade support and implementation.
